Vance Calhoun Obituary

Vance G. Calhoun, 83, of Everett and The Village at Morrison's Cove, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2011 with her family at her side. She was born Tuesday, September 18, 1928 in Everett, a daughter of the late Jacob Russell Gordon and Amanda Edith (Price) Gordon. On March 29, 1947, she married Bernard P. Calhoun, who passed away on August 6, 1989. She is survived by their children, Sandra L. Steach, and husband Martin Steach, of Saxton Julie A. Mearkle, and husband Bryan Mearkle, of Everett a son in law, Durban Metzler, of Martinsburg 6 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, 3 sisters, Gladys G. Stuckey, of Everett Sara Jane Plummer, and husband Harold Wayne Plummer, of Everett Sylvia J. Grimes, and husband James Grimes, of Everett 3 brothers, Raymond L. Gordon, of Baltimore, MD Glenn Gordon and wife Norma (Calhoun) Gordon, of Everett Samuel S. Gordon, and wife Wilma (Mills) Gordon, of Everett and a special friend, Chris Wilson, of Martinsburg. She was preceded in passing away by a son Bernard P. Calhoun, Jr., a daughter Dr. Irene A. Calhoun-Metzler, a sister Mary Edith Smith, and 5 brothers, Stanley B. Gordon, William Paul Gordon, Russell B. Gordon, Roy J. Gordon, and Ralph M. Gordon. Mrs. Calhoun was a member of Clover Creek Church of the Brethren in Fredericksburg, and a past member of Mt. Union Christian Church and the Everett Church of the Brethren. She was a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1947, and after her marriage to Bernard, moved with him to Youngstown Ohio, returning home in 1952 after buying a farm in Mattie, starting their life together as dairy farmers until retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Raystown Ambulance Service Auxiliary, a member of RSVP putting in over 1600 hours of volunteer work at Memorial Hospital of Bedford County, and was the first president of the Breezewood VFW Post #8333 Auxiliary. At home on the farm, Vance was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking and square dancing, teaching her children to dance, and also helped to milk the cattle, make hay, and take care of her growing family and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Mt. Union Christian Church in Mench with Rev. Linda Banaszak, Chaplain of The Village at Morrison's Cove officiating. Friends may call at Dalla Valle Funeral Service, Main Street, Everett on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 pm until the hour of service and share memories online at www.dallavalle-everett.com. Burial will be held at Mt. Union Cemetery. Memorial contribution may be made to the Everett Free Library or to Raystown Ambulance Service.
